With programs and ministry creating a need for a new Family Life Center to include a Gymnasium, Stage, Lobby, Elevator, Arrival Hood, Classrooms, and future Kitchen this project presented many challenges since the existing building occupied a very small site in an old established community with a very active Neighborhood Planning Unit. The small site meant that the new addition would have minimum setbacks from the street and adjacent property, and although the neighbors were concerned, a balanced approach was utilized to include concern and respect for the neighborhood fears and sensitive architectural treatment of the building to "blend in". The architectural style of the new 16,000 square foot addition was a continuation of the original 1940's sanctuary and classroom building. This two-story finished addition, complete with skylights and cast stone trim, looks as if it has always been part of the original building; which further alleviated the neighbor's concerns. It is a fine example of a "multipurpose" facility, and was constructed below the original budget and ahead of schedule. |
